Core Curriculum Defined

Concordia University

The Common Core curriculum has started to emerge in various schools throughout the US. This is important to establish a new program that will give an accurate and definite learning of the things that needs to be understood by the students. There will also be a uniform course material that will help both the instructors and the guardians of the students to come within reach of the student’s progress and help them in the same manner.

The overall standards are designed to be relevant to actual situations that the students will encounter in the real world. The experiences that they will be experiencing in life are what are going to be covered with the Common Core Curriculum. Success is what everyone wants. Students can experience such with the experiences that they will accumulate in the workplace and in the academe. The main purpose is likewise to help both the students and their parents understand the expectations and values they need to understand.

The Common Core Curriculum is an alignment of valuable courses that are greatly needed for the overall education of the students. Students are required to take these courses no matter what their major is.It is called a communal learning system where students will learn from the same textbooks and learning materials at the same timeframe. The beginnings of the 20th century was the time where this whole concept has started. This is becoming even more vibrant in the 100th year since it has been put into practice.

There is some controversy over the Common Core Curriculum however, in that it is basically a top down, universal implementation of the same coursework for all students, which takes away a significant amount of local control over the schools. Another point of controversy stems from the fact that the states that have adopted the ‘new’ curriculum receive higher scoring in applications for grants from the federal government. Most states have adopted the curriculum, and only Texas, Nebraska, Alaska, Virginia, and Minnesota have not.

Other complaints rest on the fact that the Classics have been replace with what is termed as mere informational texts about governmental information. Some have called it propaganda. Those details are offered in a very technical manner, in which reviewers uphold that the inappropriate twist can just be simply put upon the significance that such files remain in our country.

Critics are equally disappointed at the math being presented, where for example, Algebra will be taught in the 9th grade, rather than the 8th grade, making the study of calculus difficult, if not impossible for high school students. The standards are low and do not measure up to international benchmarks, Common Core proponents deny this and cite previous years of successes in math and science as their evidence of successful results. In spite of all the arguments, the decision still remains on the hand of those instructors. This will serve as the most essential influence upon the learners. The attitudes and aptitudes of the teachers are what really instill values and the quest for knowledge in students and that is the way that it will always be.
